Following success with the Tunnell Trust, cellist Philip Higham was selected as one of four artists for representation by Young Concert Artists Trust, and he was partnered at the YCAT finals in May 2009 at the Wigmore Hall by his regular accompanist, Simon Lane. Philip also became the first British cellist to win 1st prize in the prestigious 2008 International JS Bach Competition in Leipzig, quickly followed by 1st prize in the 7th International Lutoslawski Cello competition in Warsaw. He was born in Edinburgh, studied at St.Mary’s Music School and then at the RNCM with Ralph Kirshbaum and Emma Ferrand.
Pianist Simon Lane also studied at the RNCM, with Mark Ray and Dina Parakhina, and at the RAM with Julius Drake and Michael Dussek. Like Philip, he has won many prizes, including Accompanists’ prize at the Royal Overseas League Music Competition 2009.
Engagements this season include recitals at the Bridgewater Hall, Purcell Room and the Jacqueline du Pré Music Building, as well as Spitalfields and North Norfolk Music Festivals. Philip will also be appearing as soloist with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, and returning to give concerts in Italy and Germany.
